a true adventure
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is the new adaptation of a franchise born in the field of “independent comics” in 1984. Tribute Games focuses in particular on the first animated series broadcast from 1987 and which lasted until 1996 to a total of 10 seasons. Therefore, Canadian studios are taking over the colorful universe, aesthetics, tone, and designs of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Scale Knights and transposing them into a video game. One thing is certain… The artists who officiate in this project are unconditional fans of anime and it is felt from the first minutes.
Shredder’s revenge begins with a cover of the cult genre imagined by the singer of the group Faith No More “Mike Patton” in English and only in English. Lovers of the French version will have to settle for the VO. Despite this small disappointment, the work done both in the 2D animation of the opening and in the musical composition is appreciated. The publisher DotEmu has also offered the official English voices of the original series. Not yet VF therefore, but the desire to find the atmosphere of the 90’s is present. To ensure optimal comfort, the game is subtitled in French (VOSFT).
This Beat’em All is part of the chronology of the animated series and is “officially” part of the lore without being precisely placed between the events. Shredder’s Revenge spotlights iconic characters from the saga during an adventure through the heart of New York City. Throughout fifteen levels and twenty bosses, the Ninja Turtles try to disrupt the plans of Shredder and his henchmen, but not only that. Tribute Games happily draws from a rich and colorful universe to bring fans a 100% new adventure. Praise the holy pepperoni marshmallow pizza!

A tribute in pixel art.
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is all about authenticity, and it shows in every way, starting with the pixel art direction heavily inspired by the source material. Visually speaking, the title developed by Tribute Games is a colorful and edgy little hand-animated gem. The result is worthy of the attention to detail. Be it the settings, the characters and the special effects, everything is perfectly mastered. The artists pay homage to the ’87 series while bringing back a universe they have loved for many years.
The title is still in development, we will be careful not to make a final judgment on the technical aspect of the title. However, the promises made by the studios should entice Beat’em All lovers with 60 dynamic frames per second (depending on the machine) and 1080p resolution. As a reminder, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will be released in 2022 on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S thanks to support within the respective Sony and Microsoft ecosystems. . .

old school action
The fun experience imagined by Tribute Games is based on a once popular genre… Beat’em All. This genre has taken on new colors in recent years, especially with the hard-hitting Streets of Rage 4, also published by DotEmu. The world is small. Nevertheless, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge differs from its model by its ultra-dynamic approach and the “Team Against ALL” philosophy that emanates from it. The gameplay remains firmly anchored in the past, which has nothing to dislike, but above all it is based on rhythmic and accessible combat.
These confrontations are capable of seducing both license fans, eager to find their favorite heroes, and fight lovers, eager to do battle. New York teenagers spin on screen, chaining devastating attacks and cooperating to take down a regularly updated bestiary. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge has a roster of six fighters (Leonardo, Donatello Michelangelo, Raphael, Splinter, and April O’Neil) with specific attributes and abilities. The absence of hockey-mask-clad troublemaker Casey Jones is worth noting, which might disappoint some.
Fully playable alone or with others (1 to 4 players), Shredder’s Revenge is best enjoyed cooperatively. The Arcade mode, inspired by the terminals of yesteryear, and the Story mode, which incorporates some scattered RPG elements, are available entirely online, locally, or a combination of both. He is even allowed to disembark in the middle of a fight. Tribute Games therefore focuses on the cooperative experience to the detriment of multiplayer versus. No competitive mode is currently planned.

our impressions
TMNT fans, get ready! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is definitely back in 2022, and it’s clearly not for knitting. Tribute Games studios pays a vibrant tribute to an animated series that made its mark on an era, the 90’s. This Beat’em All hits hard and accurately with both its beautiful 2D graphics and energetic desire. Shredder’s revenge promises to be memorable. It remains to be seen if this neo-retro trip will easily pass the ultimate test… that of the “street”.
