Apple has started rolling out the new iOS 15.5 update. This doesn’t bring anything revolutionary, but it does bring some welcome improvements, including the (more or less veiled) possibility for developers to use external links in certain apps that could generate payments outside of the App Store.

After weeks of waiting, iOS 15.5 is finally rolling out from Apple, bringing no big apparent changes, but plenty of useful and well-hidden fixes.
The contents of iOS 15.5
Apple announces an update to Apple Podcasts, as well as some improvements and fixes. But, as is often the case, the Cupertino company is quite stingy with explanations about the security patches contained in the iOS 15.5 update. However, several of them are very interesting.

podcast
Now you can better manage your Apple Podcasts storage space. To prevent unheard episodes from piling up and taking up too much space on your device, you can limit the number of automatically stored episodes and delete the oldest ones.

Automation
The bug of automation of departures and arrivals of people, by location of the iPhone, will be better taken into account with this new update. This will prevent automations that were disabled in certain situations from failing.
In the Home app and in the HomePod settings, we discovered an icon that symbolizes the strength of the Wi-Fi signal, which solves the connection problems that some users may have experienced between their connected speaker and their iPhone. Now it will be easier to know if the connection is good between the two devices.

Plus, you can now be notified of critical alert rates in your home. Connected connected objects (smoke detector inactive or on alert, critical noise, etc.) can send you an audible notification to warn you, even in Do Not Disturb mode.
external links
According to AppleInsider, among the “other solutions” offered by Apple, the reading apps (books, newspapers, streaming audio, streaming video) can now support external links of all kinds. So this would mean that Netflix, Spotify, and many others can direct users to checkout outside of the App Store.
This should allow apps to redirect users to other secure payment sites just for their digital content purchases (books, newspapers, streaming audio, streaming video). As soon as this is effective, it will lead to the appearance of a message from Apple warning you to leave their environment and that the company now declines all responsibility…
The Photos section will prevent the creation of Memories albums in places with sensitive places or events. According to the initial findings, it would be photos related to the Holocaust (visits to concentration camps, for example), but Apple could expand the list over time. The PS5’s DualSense adaptive triggers are better reflected in games that support them.
The focus of the WWDC developer conference on June 6 probably explains this minimal update, without the expected big improvements. It will probably be for a version of iOS 15.6 or just iOS 15.5.1.
What devices are affected by the update?
If you haven’t set up updates to download and install automatically, you should go to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad, then click General > Software update to check that it is available and run it.
