convenience of use

The Lono Grill y Plancha is designed more for use in the center of the table. Therefore, there is no need for non-protruding edges to allow all diners access to the plate, at the risk of letting fat and juices leak onto the table. Therefore, protection is strongly recommended. The table, on the other hand, is quite well protected from the heat. The device includes a bottom, and the resistor itself is carried in a metal casing below the plate.

This plate occupies a total surface of 27 x 41 cm. It’s not particularly big, but it’s not really a problem since the device is used on a table.

While WMF has made stainless steel a specialty, the Lono Grill and Plancha is made from cast aluminum to which a non-stick coating has been added. Amateur cooks should enjoy it, but precautions need to be taken: avoid handling food with metal utensils, such as cutlery; it’s quite paradoxical for a tabletop grill.

The famous Cromargan, the manufacturer’s stainless steel trademark, has not been forgotten. It is located in the tower of the device. It therefore has a purely decorative role here, which remains appreciable for a device intended to sit enthroned in the center of the table. We found the Lono Grill and Plancha to be much more elegant than the Tefal Colormania griddle with its garish plastic, but beware of heat shock anyway – this tower can get very hot during use.

The cooktop proposed here still has the particularity of being ribbed on one side and smooth on the other. It should therefore offer a grill function in the first and iron in the other, but this does not change much in use, especially since only one resistance is provided here. Therefore, it is impossible to adjust these two zones independently, unlike the Riviera & Bar QPL665 or the double Krampouz Plancha Saveur.

However, a selector allows you to regulate the power of the entire surface in 5 levels. We would have preferred to find a real thermostat that indicated temperatures, but these are rather reserved for high-end griddles, as is stainless steel at hob level.

A luminous ring around the selector lets you know if the Lono Grill y Plancha is heating up or not, and therefore if it is ready to use. Despite the non-stick coating, a little oil can be used, but you don’t have to put much. It should also be borne in mind that the fat and cooking juices collection tray is quite small; therefore, it is best to limit fat. On the other hand, the drip system in the center of the plate is quite effective.

After use, the plate can be removed at the push of a button, and the WMF device’s fairly small size means it can be stored fairly easily in a cupboard. However, we are sorry that the cable is not removable to make storage even easier.

Ease of maintenance

The WMF Lono grill and griddle obviously need to be cleaned after each use. It is recommended to let it cool for 1 hour, but the residue can be removed with a cloth while it is still warm to remove it more easily.

Due to the non-stick coating, rubbing with an abrasive sponge is obviously not recommended. Once the plate is cool, a button releases it for easy cleaning. It is possible to do it by hand, with a sponge and dishwashing liquid, but it must be taken into account that the element sticks to the plate, which can complicate handling in the sink. The plate can also go in the dishwasher.

In addition to the plate, it is important to clean the drip tray, being careful not to tip it over when removing it and taking it to the sink. It is not very deep so it can fill up very quickly. It is also possible to put it in the dishwasher.

The body of the device can finally be cleaned with a damp cloth. In the absence of anti-splash rims, the part surrounding the plate ejection button is particularly exposed to cooking fat during use. We also found a little bit of grease under the plate during our test, but it is enough to wipe it with a sponge to clean it.

Cooking

WMF has equipped its grill/griddle with a 2,300 W heating element. Combined with a 5-level dimmer and fixed directly under the hob, it allows rapid heating. It only took 2 minutes and 20 s to reach our reference temperature (230°C) on the surface of the plate by running the device at full power. A performance that has only been surpassed by two models: the Senya Time Iron and the Tefal Colormania Iron.

By letting the WMF model warm up, the temperature rises to around 290°C before going down and then going up again. This time it stops at around 240°C, a more suitable temperature for cooking. Therefore, it is preferable not to rush when lighting the plate. The manufacturer also recommends preheating for 10 minutes before adding food.

Since we were looking for a temperature close to 230°C for our measurements, we were able to leave the drive at 5. The surface temperature then fluctuates between approximately 190°C and 240°C depending on the state of the resistor: l The device is heat for about 30 seconds and let the temperature drop for 1 min 30 sec each time. Other models use longer cycles and allow the temperature to vary almost 100°C, such as Tefal’s Colormania and Gourmet Gourmet plates and Severin’s KG2397. On the other hand, the QPL665 from Riviera & Bar manages to limit these variations to 30°C, but the WMF grill and griddle easily reach the best appliances in our comparison in this criterion.

The state of the resistor also depends on the homogeneity of the temperature on the surface of the plate, which does not evenly distribute heat during heating. However, the differences are limited thanks to the design of the resistor: it covers the surface of the plate well. As soon as it stops working, the differences disappear with it and a uniform temperature is obtained. The device therefore still works quite well overall, but the cooking note could have been even better without the openings provided for the dripping of cooking juices. Care must be taken to avoid them when placing the food to be cooked, since their central position can complicate the operation.
