Samsung offers a PC display designed for modern work at home uses. This 24-inch monitor has the particularity of integrating a retractable webcam.

The two years of pandemic have forced manufacturers to redesign some of their products. It’s hard not to see this inspiration on the screen of the 24-inch Samsung Monitor S40. This screen incorporates a retractable webcam with microphones, ideal on paper for telecommuting video calls.

Samsung S40VA Monitor (2022)Design
Sobriety is essential for this Samsung screen that goes to the essentials. The nearly borderless slab offers a slightly wider bottom border, just enough to place the brand’s logo at the bottom right. The chassis otherwise uses a plastic with good finishes. We are facing the typical example of the desktop screen.

The back of the product uses a black plastic surface with a not unpleasant scratched effect, but one that could quickly become a dust bait.
connectors
As with televisions, Samsung has chosen to separate the screen connection into two parts. In fact, on the back of the left side, and in a horizontal position, there are two USB type A 3.0 ports, a 3.5mm jack headphone output and a 3.5mm jack sound input. The rest takes place at the rear of the screen and vertically, where we find the classic IEC C14 power port, a DisplayPort 1.2, an HDMI 1.4 port, the USB Type-B 3.0 port and a VGA D-SUB port. Yes, this screen is equipped with analog port history, which could be useful in a professional environment.

The connection is at the level of what is expected on a screen of this type. It is not necessary to ask for HDMI 2.1 for a product destined for office automation and with a definition limited to 1920 x 1080 pixels. We still regret the absence of a USB-C port that would have made it possible to easily connect a modern laptop with a single cable.

Support for
The Samsung Monitor S4 is VESA compatible, but it also comes with a particularly practical stand. Assembly was a breeze for one person, aided by the display’s relatively compact size and light weight. The proposed stand supports 22-degree tilt, height adjustment, a pivot mode for vertical positioning, and 90-degree left-right rotation. Last good point, the presence of a small system to help cable maintenanceIt’s always good to drink.

Our only drawback concerns this last axis of rotation. If you push on the screen with one hand, it will tend to rotate the entire stand and screen, rather than just the screen. By placing a second hand on the stand to hold it, it becomes very easy to rotate the screen correctly.
Samsung S40VA Monitor (2022)Calibration and image quality
The heart of the current product is therefore a 24-inch IPS LCD panel with a very classic definition of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Good point to note: a 75Hz refresh rate and Freesync support. It does not transform the screen into a gaming product, but the idea is to improve the fluidity in office tasks, such as the 90 Hz screens of our smartphones.
At first glance, there is no problem to report, it is a screen that we enjoy working with. The screen has a matte anti-reflective treatment, so it will not shine in multimedia uses, but rather for office automation and web browsing. This type of treatment effectively reduces brightness and contrast, in other words, colors are duller.

Using our colorimetric probe and Calman software, we measured perfect color calibration. The average deltaE of 3.13 means that the color difference will hardly be noticeable to the naked eye. The cover of the next Vogue will not be designed on this screen, but otherwise it should work fine for most users. The screen is also content to cover 105% of the sRGB space for 71% of the DCI-P3 space, confirming that it is not aimed at professional content creators.
As expected, it is in contrast and brightness that it fails. We measure a contrast ratio of 940:1, very low for an LCD screen, with a maximum brightness of 206 cd/m², which is also quite limited. Fortunately, we’re talking about a desktop monitor, with anti-reflective treatment, so sunlight shouldn’t be a concern.
Samsung S40VA Monitor (2022)Audio
The Samsung S40 incorporates a small and simple speaker. Don’t be fooled by the design that features a grille to the right and left of the screen, there is only one mono speaker located at the bottom left of the screen. With a simple mono sound, you don’t get very far.
The display speaker will be there primarily for troubleshooting video meetings, listening to music or watching a video occasionally. Our advice will continue to be to favor the use of headphones or dedicated speakers. A speaker to solve problems in a nutshell.
Samsung S40VA Monitor (2022)Camera
We attack the great particularity of this screen: the presence of a retractable camera on the slab. The technical sheet does not give information about the characteristics of the integrated camera and the drivers installed by default with Windows 11 do not say more. We can only say that it is a full HD webcam to which Samsung associates an infrared camera. This allows you to support Windows Hello for facial recognition. A very good point in a professional environment.

On the other hand, the image quality leaves a lot to be desired. This will be enough to show your face in Google Meet and Zoom, but don’t expect to present objects or use your environment in a presentation.
It is a retractable camera, pressing on top of the screen allows the camera to pop out. To store it, you need to push it towards the screen, which will completely disconnect it, as well as the microphone, and make it invisible to Windows. A good point for privacy.
Samsung S40VA Monitor (2022)Interface
The OSD interface of the screen goes to the essentials. We are not here in front of a smart monitor equipped with a complete operating system. Therefore, we can adjust some image options (brightness, contrast, colorimetry) and activate a “protection mode” at will. This is a blue light filter. As in smartphones, the result is a screen that turns red, with the aim of reducing vision wear in a dark environment.

Samsung S40VA Monitor (2022)Consumption
The screen incorporates its own power supply. All you need is a conventional cable to connect the monitor. During our tests, we noticed an average consumption of 15.6 watts. According to Samsung’s data sheet, it can go up to 40 watts. We imagine this is a rare case where the USB hub is used to its fullest to supply power-hungry peripherals.
Samsung S40VA Monitor (2022)Price and release date
The Samsung Monitor S40VA screen is sold at 240 euros. It is above the price of office screens of this size, but here we benefit from the work of a great brand and above all from the integration of functions such as the webcam or the adjustable foot. After all, Apple is charging twice the price of Samsung’s full screen just to offer such an ergonomic stand on its Studio Display.
For 200 euros, you can still find excellent references in Iiyama, for example. This gives the impression that Samsung charges 40 euros for a well-integrated Windows Hello camera.
