FIGAROVOX/CHRONICLE – From the war in Ukraine to the consequences of illegal immigration, the lawyer denounces a political and media space that refuses to see certain realities for ideological reasons.
Gilles-William Goldnadel is a lawyer and essayist. Every week, he breaks down the news for FigaroVox.
When it comes to putting a temporary end to my weekly chronicles due to the summer holidays, I would like to try one last time to try to make sense of the insane.
My reader knows very well that I am questioning the mental health of contemporary collective psychology. It is not that I have never considered the human mental universe rational, but rather that I notice a precipitous race towards unreason for various reasons that I have tried to put in order in my book. Media neuroses: how the world became an angry mob (Plon) with the help of the analyzes of Freud and Le Bon.
My end-of-season reflections will focus on two sets of massive political-media behaviors that I consider apparently meaningless but to which I will try to give not a rational sense but a sensible ideological explanation.
The West in general, France in particular, and especially patriotic France, continues to inspire the French Left with a critical spirit sharpened to the point of acute unreason.

My first perplexing question relates to the collective vision of the Ukrainian conflict. More precisely, I keep wondering about the reasons, in my opinion very unreasonable, that could explain why the same people who show a sometimes selective historical hypermnesia to continue giving part of the French right the sepia color of Petainism, look at the Azov Battalion with dazzling admiration despite the fact that some of its members now wear disturbing para-Nazi insignia. This difference in treatment meaningless in space, wildly anachronistic in time, can only find its explanatory meaning because the West in general, France in particular, and especially patriotic France, continue to inspire the French Left with a keenly critical mind to the point of acute unreason. .
I am a little embarrassed to have to point out that the above reflection has nothing to do with a judgment on the armed initiative of Putin’s Russia in Ukraine, that it is difficult to consider anything other than an unforgivable aggression against a sovereign state.
I take this opportunity to see that these same people have more warlike compassion for Ukraine’s invaded borders than when a Western nation-state like France sees its borders violated on a daily basis. As if the noble warlike patriotism of the Other suddenly put on the repulsive mask of belligerent nationalism when there is a Western face and above all a French one underneath.
On the other hand, I have accustomed my reader to my perplexity by this way in which the conventional press hides the information that disturbs it. I called “cover-up authorities” this media power to hide such a momentous event for the benefit of another smaller but more ideologically accommodating.
A deadly media silence, broken only by social networks that allowed the victims not to be completely buried in the indifferent land.
Gilles-William Goldnadel
What do seven hundred Catholics killed in Nigeria in the last three months have in common, ten people, all white and of all ages, killed last year by a Syrian in Boulder, Colorado, a military doctor killed “in the name of God” ? in Marseille in front of their children’s Catholic school and many French people who in recent weeks have been killed or wounded on the streets of France, almost daily, some by Eritreans, some Tunisians, some Afghans, some still others, all or almost all without papers?
A deadly media silence, broken only by social networks that allowed the victims not to be completely buried in the indifferent land. The networks that then allowed certain news channels – or the Figaro put the victims, with this delay that prevents the heat of popular emotion, in the cold light.
Networks so booed by the authorities of the concealment, annoyed, that I baptized them with grateful derision “unfortunate sphere”. But there is another point in common between the different people deliberately buried under a shroud of oblivion. They were all victims of media-protected executioners. Out of ideological fear of giving some advantage to the adversary of radical Islam or massive and illegal Islamic immigration. Therefore, any natural compassion due to innocent victims is weighed down by this concealing ideological passion.
When professional Pavlovian reflexes stop the human heart from beating. This is the meaning we can give to this insane behavior. We live in quite unreasonable times.
